Pro-Act's Microbes at Work

Pro-Act’s microbes bubbling in the primary tank.

This Delaware dairy farm raises 2,000 head of cattle at their facility. With that amount of cattle, manure management can become a headache.  But they have a system set up that has liquefied their solids, allowed them to pump without agitation then spread the manure with little odor.

A successful setup with Pro-Act’s microbes
The flush water is pumped from the secondary tank to the towers; it goes through the basement of the barn from each end. The flush water is processed by two separators and one screw press then goes to the primary tank. Each tank has one of our patented ½ hp surface diffusers.

In the primary tank, the top water passes to the secondary tank through a U pipe, so the level never changes. In the photo at the top of the page, you can see a robust microbial population has developed that is converting nitrogen and carbon to proteins and amino acids. Our microbes are reducing odor, liquefying solids and fixing nitrogen in the central facultative zone. There is very little odor coming from this tank.

What accounts for this extraordinary microbial growth?
This farm has certainly found success with Pro-Act’s Manure Munching Microbes. But other factors have also played a part in their success:

  • The large volume and constant depth of the primary tank allow the microbes to stratify and feed one another with few outside disturbances.

  • The manure contains no milk-house cleaning chemicals or copper sulfate. The lack of these anti-microbial products is a big plus.
