Dairy Finds a Better Way to Pump Their Lagoons
May 29, 2007 ---- Pumping a
lagoon bottom is a necessary but often time-consuming, messy and costly dairy
task. Solids can become very heavy at the bottom, requiring agitation to loosen
them. This agitation ends up disturbing the stratification of the lagoon’s
nutrients, leaving the farm with a soupy mess. But this spring, with the help of
Pro-Act Microbial’s manure treatment system and Scavenger pump, Vander
Werff-Rigg Dairy in Escalon, California was able to pump easily and without
agitation.
“The spring pumping can sometimes be difficult, but I was really pleased with
how the Scavenger performed,” says Caroline Rigg, one of the dairy’s owners.
“It’s very flexible…I can move it easily to any point in the lagoon.”
The Scavenger is a retractable bottom pump with multi-level capability and a
flexible hose, allowing it to remove bottom water at any level with ease and
without costly and time-consuming agitation. The design also allows the dairy to
pump without disturbing the top water, leaving the stratification in place. In
addition, the pump is engineered for portability, allowing the user to move the
pump between lagoons as needed.
Although it was designed to work in conjunction with the Pro-Act treatment
system, the Scavenger can also be effective for any dairy as long as they have a
very healthy lagoon and fairly loose solids.
