Pro-Act Microbial Brings Biogas Collection Within Reach

Warren, RI, October3, 2007 ---- Concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs) are lumped into the group of green house gas emitters, so their environmental restrictions are tightening. Traditional digesters are a solution, but they have been financially out of reach and difficult to maintain for most dairies. Pro-Act Microbial has made digester technology affordable, easy to operate, and even profitable for the farm.

Pro-Act’s manure treatment system is designed in components. The components allow a farm to create a treatment system based on its unique needs. Pro-Act’s core treatment system reduces odor, liquefies solids and stratifies nutrients. Additional components include the new biogas digester and, ultimately, the Ideal Treatment System™ (ITS).

Pro-Act’s core manure treatment system stabilizes the anaerobic digestion process and facilitates the out-gassing of methane, providing a solid foundation for the digester to do its work. The gas, once captured, can be used for heat, electricity or simply burned off. All of these options could qualify for profitable carbon credits. With the affordable set up and easy operation which requires no additional staff, Pro-Act’s digester turns manure into an asset rather than an expense.

The Ideal Treatment System (ITS) uses Slurrystore® tanks because they provide a controlled environment for the microbial system to work more efficiently. Covered tanks become the biogas digester while the collected gas is used to heat the tank for optimal performance. The ITS gives farms an advanced treatment system that allows them to collect and profit from biogas as well as improve solids and phosphorus removal. Optimizing gas production and collecting and utilizing biogas give a better return on investment of the tanks and lower the cost of ownership.

“The market is waking up to the benefits of collecting and utilizing biogas,” explains Bill Campion, president of Pro-Act Microbial. “We’re excited to finally give farms a digester that is both good for the environment and affordable to the dairies.”
