Dramatically Cuts Farms’ Fertilizer Use
Warren, RI, March 28, 2008 ---
Recent on-farm testing has shown that Pro-Act Biotech’s biologically
active manure, when compared to untreated manure, has a larger
percentage of inorganic nitrogen which is immediately available for
plant use. In addition, the top water is significantly lower in
phosphorus than in untreated manure storage. This comes down to the
farm purchasing much less fertilizer, being able to irrigate more
and growing more bountiful crops. This improved fertilizer is
groundbreaking news for farms and nutrient planners dealing with
high fertilizer prices and more stringent nutrient regulations.
Pro-Act’s manure treatment is known in the agricultural industry for
reducing odor and solids and making nutrients more manageable, but
the dramatically improved fertilizer value has become another key
benefit. Pro-Act converts organic nitrogen to inorganic nitrogen
(ammonium) which is more available and ready to use by plants. Under
most conditions, ammonium is volatile and normally evaporates to the
air where it is lost from the manure lagoon. But Pro-Act’s
three-stage digester counteracts this. Much less ammonium goes to
atmosphere, allowing farmers to retain more of that valuable
nitrogen fertilizer for their crops.
Nutrient stratification makes it easier to access this improved
fertilizer. As treated manure stratifies in the lagoon, a majority
of the phosphorus settles to the bottom. Untreated manure contains
six to ten pounds of phosphorus per thousand gallons. By comparison,
manure top water treated by Pro-Act’s system contains less than two
pounds per 1,000 gallons. Since treated manure top water has
significantly less phosphorus than untreated, farms using Pro-Act
can irrigate at least three times as much, supplying their crops
nitrogen needs with manure water.
“All manure is not equal,” explains Bill Campion, president of
Pro-Act Biotech. “Our customers find they spend much less on
fertilizer. So much less, that, in many cases, the savings pays for
their Pro-Act treatment.”
