Wisconsin Dairy Producers Faced with New Regulations

November 15, 2006 / Madison, WI — Wisconsin dairy farmers will soon be feeling the pressure from new regulations. A recent Professional Dairy Producers of Wisconsin (PDPW) summit took place on November 2-3 to address the new regulations on air quality, siting and nutrient management. The forum brought together dairy producers, legislators, regulators and local officials to exchange ideas and seek solutions.

As a sponsor of the summit, Pro-Act Microbial, Inc. was there in support of dairy producers. Pro-Act’s manure treatment system can help dairies reduce emissions, decrease odor and more easily maintain their nutrient management plans.

Pro-Act’s microbial treatment system uses volatile organic acids as a food source, converting them to non-volatile components that do not go to atmosphere. Emissions and odor from a microbially active lagoon are decreased dramatically, making compliance easier.

Nutrient management will be another issue for Wisconsin dairies. Pro-Act’s system can help farmers easily maintain their nutrient management plans. Their microbial system does not change the amount of nutrients in the manure, but they do change the form. They also allow for stratification of the nutrients since agitation is not needed. The top water remains lower in nutrients and can be readily used for irrigation. Settled phosphorous remains at the bottom until pumped, helping farmers control the application.

Pro-Act serves dairy producers across the U.S. and Canada in handling their manure treatment while meeting ever increasing regulations. Now that Wisconsin farmers need to find ways to practically and affordably meet new state regulations, Pro-Act Microbial is there to support them.

Pro-Act is the leader in bioaugmentation of manure lagoons and services dairies throughout the US and Canada.
